How to save ChatGPT conversations to Notion
Connect Notion once to save ChatGPT activity there automatically or sync one open conversation on demand.
By Chatlog team
The short version
In Chatlog, open Connections, choose Connect Notion, and approve the AI Chat Log template. Enable automatic capture and Notion delivery for new or continued ChatGPT activity, or choose Sync to Notion for one open conversation. Then check the page in Notion. No API token or database ID is needed.
Connect the template the first time
Start in Chatlog’s options page and open Connections. Choose Connect Notion; Notion opens its authorization screen. Select the workspace where you want the archive, then approve the included AI Chat Log template page. This gives the connection access to the page used for the archive. Notion connections use page permissions, so if your workspace restricts connections, an administrator may need to allow it. (Notion’s connection permissions guide.)
Return to Chatlog and confirm the connection is shown in Connections. Chatlog finds the template’s database through authorization; you do not need to create a developer integration, paste a token, or enter a database ID. A separate Markdown folder is optional. If Notion is your only destination, you can leave the folder unselected.
Now open ChatGPT in Chrome, sign in, allow Chatlog access to chatgpt.com if prompted, and refresh the tab after changing access. Automatic capture needs Chrome open, the provider tab available, and capture enabled. Turn on Notion delivery in Chatlog as well if you want those captured chats delivered there. Capture and delivery have separate controls, so check both when setting up an automatic workflow.
Choose automatic delivery or one-chat sync
With automatic capture and Notion delivery enabled, Chatlog can save new conversations and later activity in conversations you continue. It does not sweep every past chat in your ChatGPT account. For older history, use ChatGPT’s official data export and import eligible files separately through Chatlog’s history-import settings; the export process and ongoing capture are distinct. (OpenAI’s export instructions.)
If you paused automatic capture or delivery, or only need one chat, open the conversation in ChatGPT and click the Chatlog extension icon. Choose Sync to Notion for that conversation. This is a single-chat action: it queues that chat for delivery even if automatic saving is paused. A queued status is not a completion notice. Wait for the status to report success, then check the page in Notion. The popup’s Save conversation action keeps a copy in Chatlog’s local browser archive and follows your configured destinations. To keep future saves local only, pause Notion delivery. A Markdown folder is an optional extra local copy; it is not required for the browser archive or a Notion-only setup.
Verify the Notion page
Open the AI Chat Log database in the workspace you authorized. Find the conversation by its title and open its page. Check that the first and latest messages you expect are present, then search for a distinctive phrase from the middle of the thread. Review code blocks, tables, links, and any visible file references that matter to you. This quick readback catches wrong-workspace, permission, and partial-capture problems before you rely on the page.
Chatlog sends readable conversation content to Notion, but this does not mean every source attachment is uploaded as a Notion file. Accessible, supported files may have a reference in the saved record; binary attachments are not uploaded to Notion. Keep important source files separately and inspect the page for any partial-capture warning.
Troubleshoot missing pages or duplicate archives
If a page does not appear, first check Chatlog’s status. If it is queued, leave Chrome open while delivery is pending. If it reports an issue, check that Chatlog is connected to the intended Notion workspace, that the AI Chat Log page remains shared with the connection, and that Notion delivery is enabled. In Notion, a connection may need to be added to the specific page through its menu; workspace policies can also limit who may grant access. Before retrying, search the existing Notion archive for the conversation and review Chatlog’s reported issue. Retry only after confirming the page was not already delivered and the cause is resolved, since a repeat may create a duplicate.
If you disconnected Notion or access expired, use Chatlog’s Reconnect Notion action when it appears. During Notion’s authorization, choose Select pages to share and select the existing AI Chat Log page. Selecting Use a template provided by the developer asks Notion to duplicate a template. Reconnecting to the remembered existing page helps Chatlog keep delivering to the prior archive instead of starting another one. Check the existing page and Chatlog’s status before retrying an uncertain delivery. (Notion authorization documentation.)
For a one-off manual alternative, save a conversation as Markdown and import the file into Notion using Settings → Import → Text & Markdown. Notion accepts standard Markdown, though advanced formatting and anchor links may not carry over exactly. This is a separate file import, not a live connection. (Notion’s Markdown import instructions.)
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Markdown folder for Notion?
No. Notion can be your only destination. The local Markdown archive is a separate option you can add if you want a second copy on your device.
Does Chatlog import every old ChatGPT conversation automatically?
No. Automatic capture covers new or continued activity while Chrome is open and capture is enabled. For older history, request an official ChatGPT export and use the separate import flow in Chatlog settings.
Why is the conversation queued but missing in Notion?
Queued means delivery remains pending. Keep Chrome open, check the connection and page access, and wait for a success status. Then reopen the destination database and search for the chat title.
How can I reconnect without making another archive?
Choose Reconnect Notion in Chatlog, then authorize the existing AI Chat Log page using Select pages to share. Avoid choosing the template-duplication option when you mean to reuse the current archive.
